Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy

Jurnal Hurriah: Journal of Educational Evaluation and Research is firmly committed to upholding academic integrity, confidentiality, transparency, and strict human accountability in scholarly publishing. This policy governs the use of artificial intelligence (AI), including generative AI models and AI-assisted tools, across manuscript preparation, editorial workflows, and the peer-review process.

While AI may support certain supplementary activities undertaken by authors and editors under strict conditions, it must never replace human scholarly judgment or editorial decision-making. Furthermore, peer reviewers are strictly prohibited from using AI in the peer-review process.

1. Use of AI by Authors

Authors may utilize AI tools exclusively to support language polishing, grammar correction, translation, and minor enhancements to readability or presentation. All AI-assisted changes must be rigorously reviewed and verified by the human authors to ensure that they preserve the intended academic meaning and do not introduce inaccuracies, biases, unsupported claims, or inappropriate text borrowing.

Authors must NOT use AI to:

Fabricate or falsify educational data, survey results, interview transcripts, quotations, references, findings, or any other research evidence.

Generate or manipulate images, charts, or diagrams in ways that misrepresent research findings.

Replace the authors' critical educational interpretation, scholarly judgment, or core responsibility for the study.

Submit entirely AI-generated material as original research without a transparent and rigorous methodological basis.

Where AI functions as a formal research tool (such as in data modeling or learning analytics), authors must explicitly describe its role in the Methods section, identifying the tool, version, provider, its specific purpose, and how outputs were verified.

Human Responsibility: Authors remain 100% responsible for the originality, accuracy, validity, and integrity of the entire manuscript, including any text or data modified with AI assistance.

2. Mandatory Disclosure of AI Use by Authors

Authors must disclose any use of AI in preparing or revising a submitted manuscript—including language editing, translation, or technical assistance.

The disclosure must appear in a dedicated section entitled “Declaration of AI Use”, placed immediately before the References.

Required Declaration Elements:

Name of the AI tool and software provider.

Version or model identifier (where available).

Purpose and extent of its use (specifying sections or tasks).

Confirmation of how authors reviewed and verified the resulting content.

Example Declaration (When AI was used):

During the preparation of this manuscript, the authors used ChatGPT (OpenAI, GPT-4) to improve the English grammar and readability of the Introduction and Discussion sections. The authors reviewed and edited all AI-assisted changes, verified their factual accuracy, and take full responsibility for the final content of the manuscript.

Example Declaration (When NO AI was used):

The authors declare that no AI tools were used in the preparation or revision of this manuscript.

3. AI and Authorship

No AI Authorship: Artificial intelligence tools, LLMs, or automated writing software cannot be listed as authors or co-authors. AI cannot assume public responsibility, approve final versions, disclose conflicts of interest, or fulfill the ethical obligations of authorship.

Human Accountability: All responsibilities of authorship remain solely with the named human authors.

4. Use of AI by the Editorial Team

Editors may use AI solely for limited administrative or language-related assistance involving non-confidential material. AI must never replace an editor's evaluation of scholarly merit, interpretation of reviewer reports, or decisions to accept, reject, or request revisions.

Disclosure: Any editorial use of AI must be transparently disclosed and recorded in the manuscript's editorial log.

Strict Confidentiality: Editors are strictly prohibited from entering or uploading unpublished manuscripts, reviewer reports, author identities, or confidential correspondence into external AI applications. Editors remain fully accountable for all editorial decisions.

5. Prohibition of AI Use in Peer Review

To protect confidentiality and ensure authentic academic evaluation, peer reviewers must conduct their reviews independently using their own expertise and scholarly judgment. The use of AI in any part of the peer-review process is strictly prohibited.

This prohibition forbids:

Using AI to analyze, summarize, interpret, or evaluate a manuscript.

Using AI to assess originality, methodology, references, or scholarly contribution.

Using AI to generate, draft, rewrite, or polish review comments or recommendations.

Uploading any part of a manuscript, supplementary file, or review document into an AI application.

If a reviewer cannot complete an assignment without AI assistance, they must decline or notify the handling editor immediately.

6. Confidentiality and Human Accountability

Authors, reviewers, and editors must protect confidential, personal, and sensitive material when utilizing digital tools. Permitted AI use does not waive human responsibility for research integrity, confidentiality, and accurate reporting. Meaningful human oversight is mandatory at every stage of the publishing workflow.

7. Non-Compliance and Policy Breaches

Suspected breaches of this AI policy will be investigated fairly, giving the individuals involved an opportunity to provide an explanation.

Depending on the severity of the violation, the journal may request corrections, reject a manuscript, commission a new independent review, or issue formal post-publication notices (such as corrections or retractions). Reviewers or editors found in violation will be removed from their roles immediately.
